It’s amazing for me to look back to 2010, the year StringCan was born. It seems simultaneously like a lifetime ago, and yet like yesterday. It probably has a little to do with the fact that 2020 has been, and probably will be, one of the weirdest years in anyone’s life… But taking some time to look back even further - to the day the light bulb and excitement of founding my own agency took hold of me, is pretty fun and rewarding. Often, entrepreneurs, and humans in general, keep moving forward without a moment to pause, look back, and reflect on what got them where they are today. Let’s set the stage, shall we?

In 2010, get ready for it, the first-ever iPad was introduced. Hard to believe it’s been 10 years already. Or that it’s only been 10 years. Considering how far technology has come in 10 years, it’s not hard to believe how far my industry, and my agency, have come. 2010 brought career change for me, and not just me. Simon Cowell left American Idol and national news was made in epic fashion following the abrupt exit of a JetBlue employee out the chute. Digital marketing and advertising had a few moments of pop culture fame when the movie Social Network came out in the fall and Zuck played the villain in his own movie. And with that, for our digital marketing agency, StringCan Interactive, it was time for a change and updating our brand. When we 1st launched the business, we focused heavily on creating connections. Remember when you were young and connecting with someone was as simple as tying two cans together with a string. Talking and listening were done one at a time. Communication was fragile and great care had to be taken to stay linked. Though technology has changed, the principles have not. Customers require the same listening, one-to-one relationship, and care that our friendships did when we were young. We told that story in a creative way by creating the "string" effect through our logo. Well, 10 years later, we are proud of the 1,000's of client locations we've helped close that communication gap and create meaningful connections with both prospective and current customers. And since our team is all about making the complex simple, we decided as we announce our 10 year anniversary we wanted to simplify our logo. You can learn more about why on "Decade In, What does our new logo mean?" For now, here is our fun way of celebrating our new logo.

While my career move wasn’t as public as the JetBlue employee’s exit, I did take a big risk to start an agency. But my deep love of coaching, teaching, and wanting to help owners succeed compelled me to start from scratch. I definitely didn’t do all of this alone, either.

Mainly I have my incredible family to thank for helping me see StringCan through 10 years of incredible ups and downs. From supporting long days, even longer nights, international expansion, celebrations, and frustrations - they were there through it all. And today we are better than ever. If you want a sneak peek into how I turned my business lessons into an opportunity for incredible family growth, my book Family 2.0 is for you. Without my Family 1.0, I wouldn’t be writing this today.

There are way too many specific people, friends and family to call out. The many calls, texts, emails, and conversations I’ve had with you meant the world to me to celebrate the wins and help me deal with the challenges. I’d like to thank my family, friends, incredible mentors and former employers, advisors, employees past and present, clients past and present, and peers from my various networks such as Entrepreneurs Organization and Agency Management Institute. You have all provided me with the ability to learn, grow, dust me off after a crash and burn, fly and soar, and more. I am so incredibly blessed to be a part of the amazing digital marketing industry and even more blessed to serve our clients who put their trust in us.Thank you,Jay[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

Work Habits & Productivity

2. Effortless
BY GREG MCKEOWN
Speaking of actions becoming more effortless, this is another book of McKeown’s that topped our 2022 reading list. Adding onto the powerful guidance around essentialism, this read delivers “proven strategies for making the most important activities the easiest ones,” like mapping out the minimum number of steps, finding the courage to “be rubbish” and more.
