Leadership Lessons From Seven Weeks in Spain
Spending seven weeks in Spain was not about escaping leadership. If anything, it made me reflect on what truly matters: the people who challenge, support, and inspire us.
Leadership can feel isolating, especially in the C suite. The pressure to have the right answers, the weight of decision-making—it is a lot. But what I learned while balancing deadlines with spontaneous moments of reflection is that success does not come from going it alone. It comes from having the right people in your corner.
The Reality Behind the Instagram Moments
Yes, Spain was beautiful. The architecture, the food, the culture—it was breathtaking. But let’s be real. Behind every stunning sunset was a work call. Behind every leisurely meal was a strategic decision waiting to be made. Leadership does not pause just because you change locations.
There were still spreadsheets to analyze, client calls to take, and team challenges to navigate. And let’s not forget everyday life—figuring out a foreign washing machine or navigating a grocery store when you barely speak the language.
It reinforced a key lesson: great leaders are not the ones who escape the grind. They are the ones who learn to adapt, stay intentional, and keep showing up—no matter the setting.
The Mentors Who Keep You Grounded
No one reaches the C suite alone. I would not be the leader I am today without mentors like Sandy Catour. She taught me that agency finance is more than numbers—it is about creating a foundation that fuels long-term growth.
Then there is Jane Cebrynski—part friend, part business coach, full-time challenger. She pushes me beyond my comfort zone, even when it is uncomfortable. Even when tears make an appearance. Every COO needs a Jane in their life—someone who will hold them accountable while fiercely supporting their success.
The Power of Finding Your People
One of the best investments our agency has is in the Agency Management Institute. That is where I met Carolyn Lodge, a fellow COO I deeply admire. Our agencies might differ, but our roles, challenges, and purpose are the same.
Carolyn has become more than a peer—she is a sounding board, a collaborator, and a trusted friend. That is why I am thrilled she is joining me for my final week, in Barcelona. We will explore the city, exchange insights, and dive into our latest book club pick, The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins.
Because no matter where you are in the world, the right people make all the difference.
Leadership Is a Team Sport
One takeaway from my time in Spain? Leadership is not about knowing everything—it is about surrounding yourself with the right people. The ones who challenge your thinking, help you grow, and remind you that you are not in this alone.
