You wouldn’t drive your car blindfolded, right? That’d be insane. But that’s exactly what happens when businesses jump into marketing without a strategy. It might look like progress—you’re posting, emailing, attending trade shows—but under the hood? There’s no direction. No alignment. No gas in the tank.
“Random acts of marketing won’t get you where you want to go. You need a roadmap, not a dartboard.”
The Trap Mid-Market Companies Fall Into
A lot of mid-market businesses fall into what we call the “Spray and Pray” trap. They chase marketing trends—Google Ads, trade shows, influencer campaigns—without a clear reason why. One company told us, “We’re on Google Ads because our customers are there.” But when we asked about their strategy? They pulled up their ad copy. That’s not strategy. That’s guesswork.
“I can literally just swap out your company name and put any other manufacturing firm that does what you do into these ads.”
What’s missing is the glue that holds it all together: strategic intent.
Strategy Is the GPS, Not Just a Map
A solid strategy isn’t just a bunch of pretty slides or inspirational quotes. It’s about knowing where you’re going, who you're targeting, and why they should care.
“Strategy gives you that focus… it’s the deliberate, high-level approach that defines where you're trying to get to.”
At StringCan, we think of strategy as the GPS. Without it, you’re just in a shiny Ferrari with no gas and no clue where to turn next. And for mid-market companies already navigating growth challenges, wasting time and budget like that hurts.
How to Get Out of the Blindfold Game
Here’s the tough love: if your team can’t connect every marketing activity to a business goal, it’s time to hit pause.
Start here:
1. Define Real Marketing Objectives
Forget vanity metrics. Align your marketing goals with business priorities—whether it's increasing qualified leads, entering a new market, or building brand trust. And set measurable KPIs, not just fuzzy hopes.
2. Know Your ICP (Ideal Customer Profile)
Dig deep. Like, really deep. What are their pain points, motivations, decision-making behaviors? When you understand your audience that clearly, everything clicks—your messaging, your positioning, your offers.
“Once you get insane clarity around your ideal customer profile, everything just starts clicking.”
3. Build a Strategy Before You Execute
Don’t launch a campaign just because your competitor did. Map out your goals, understand your customer, then decide which tactics to use and when. If you don't have a strategy that connects all the dots, you're just throwing darts with a blindfold on.
From Confusion to Clarity: A Real Client Win
One of our favorite client stories started just like this. A manufacturing company came to us wanting to “fix” their Google Ads. What we discovered? They had no strategy. Their ads were vague, unfocused, and forgettable.
We pulled them back. We walked their factory floor, asked about their customers, and unearthed powerful stories that had been buried under technical jargon and generic messaging.
We rebuilt their strategy from the ground up. Sixty days later, they had clarity. Ninety days in, they saw 3–4x the performance. Today? They’ve scaled to multiple facilities and become a powerhouse in their space.
Your Turn
Take a hard look at your current marketing. Can you clearly connect each effort to a strategic business goal? If not, start now. Schedule a session with your leadership team. Define your goals. Nail down your ICP. Build a 90-day marketing roadmap that aligns everything.
“If you wouldn’t drive your business blindfolded, why run your marketing that way? Take the blindfold off—start with strategy.”
