As a leader, you’ve probably heard the mantra: “Find balance.” Balance between work and life. Balance between leading and delegating. Balance between planning and adapting. And let’s be honest, that advice can feel impossible—or worse, completely out of touch.

Balance? After years of trying to chase it, I’ve realized it’s not just unattainable—it’s a myth. High performers don’t thrive by splitting their time evenly between competing demands. We thrive by integrating, setting boundaries, and prioritizing what truly matters.

And yes, I’m still figuring it out.

Spain And The Experiment In Letting Go

In a few weeks, I’m packing up my life in Arizona to work remotely from Spain for seven weeks. Sounds dreamy, right? But here’s the twist: I’ll be working in a country where I don’t speak the language, navigating new routines, and leading my team from a whole new time zone. The prospect is equally thrilling and terrifying.

Here’s the part that challenges me: I’ve been inspired by The Surrender Experiment and The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer. These books are all about releasing control and trusting life’s flow. But let’s face it—I love control. I plan my day before I’ve even had my first coffee. The idea of letting go feels as unnatural to me as speaking fluent Spanish (which, spoiler alert, I don’t).

So, how do I reconcile my need to plan with my desire to embrace spontaneity?

Boundaries Make Thriving Possible

Thriving isn’t about achieving perfect balance. It’s about creating boundaries that help you adapt. For this trip, it means planning just enough to ensure my business thrives while leaving space for the unexpected.

For example, I’ve set clear work hours each day to focus on critical tasks and keep my team supported. But I’ve also reserved time for exploring, getting lost in Spanish streets, and letting life surprise me. If I were chasing balance, I’d over-schedule myself and miss out on the joys of spontaneity.

Integration Beats Balance Every Time

Work and life don’t need to be separate halves of a whole. They need to complement each other. Here’s how I’m approaching integration:

1. Set Priorities:

My team knows what requires my direct attention while I’m away, and I trust them to handle the rest.

2. Embrace Flexibility:

Some of the best moments in life and work come from the unplanned.

3. Stay Present:

Whether I’m running a meeting or wandering through a Spanish market, I’m focused on being fully in the moment.

Your Next Step

Balance is a myth, but thriving isn’t. Leaders who succeed do so by setting boundaries, integrating work and life, and embracing the magic that comes from letting go of rigid control.

So, here’s a challenge for you: What’s one thing you can let go of this week? Maybe it’s delegating a task, leaving your calendar open for an afternoon, or saying yes to something spontaneous. Let life surprise you.

When you stop chasing balance, you might just find clarity—and the results you’ve been searching for.

Speaking of actions becoming more effortless, this is another book of McKeown’s that topped our 2022 reading list. Adding onto the powerful guidance around essentialism, this read delivers “proven strategies for making the most important activities the easiest ones,” like mapping out the minimum number of steps, finding the courage to “be rubbish” and more.
